How nice to hear from a Montrealer. As you know, most children in Montreal are exposed to 2 or more languages. Bilingualism is,however, difficult to define since children are exposed to multiple languages in many different ways. We are just finalizing a chart audit looking in some detail at the treatment results of our linguistically diverse children. The short answer is that we have not found bilingualism to be a risk factor in treatment outcome; that is, the children who come from linguistically diverse backgrounds, do not take longer to complete Stage 1 of the Lidcombe Program. In answer to your other question...I do not generally recommend treatment conducted by siblings; however, in some families, it is the older siblings who traditionally, have much responsibility for the care of their younger sibs. Often these are families where the home language is neither English nor French and the parents rely on their older siblings to be the 'translators' . In these cases I might include the sibling in treatment, if that sibling is available to come to the treatment session.
