Severity ratings are perceptual and therefore not defined. Sometimes parents will rate the severity of their children's stuttering either higher or lower than what I might have thought. If there is a huge difference between our perceptions this is a point of discussion since I will want to know what characteristics of the stutter caused the parent to rate that particular episode of stuttering either much higher or lower than what I might have thought. This is part of the parent training process. I don't find much difference in training parents of older children. The relationship has changed and live are certainly busier so the comitment to treatment must be there and the timing for intervention right.
