Timothy, Regarding the issue of natural recovery and the Lidcombe Program, take a look at this threaded discussion where this question has been discussed a bit . In my experience there have been families who did not complete the treatment for various reasons ranging from the fact that the family moved, a family crisis may have necessitated that they stop treatment, funding for therapy has run out, and many other ‘lifestyle’ issues. Sometimes, a child with a co-morbid speech or language concern needs another speech therapy to deal with those issues and we make a treatment decision to ‘stall’ the progress of the LP while we deal with the other communication concerns. These decisions are fully discussed with the family without judgment and families are often welcomed back to treatment when the timing is right. When a family receives treatment given by a speech language pathologist who is well trained and mentored in this process I feel very confident in the program. Unfortunately, I cannot speak for families who may have received treatment from clinicians who are not trained properly or who may have adjusted the Lidcombe Program by adding or eliminating parts of it.
