When parents find out that they will be participating in the treatment they are sometimes reluctant because they feel unprepared to take on this role. One function of the clinician is to make sure that challenges are well supported so that parents will be successful. My experience has been that when parents start to succeed they are encouraged to continue. If the challenges are not supported by the clinician the parent can sometimes start to withdraw. Progress is also a great motivator and since progress is informed by a simple daily measurement made by the parents that shows improvement over time, this can also inspire the parents to continue. Finally, the Lidcombe Program is fun and children enjoy it. All of these factors combine, I think, to keep parents interested, active participants in the treatment process.
