Whitney and Jodi, Great question! This is probably not as easy to know with some clients compared to others. Some folks are more overt at acknowledging success, and that makes it easy. Some clues that tell me a client is beginning to internalize are: 1) smiling when they notice they've accomplished a task, used a technique, made a phone call, etc., 2) reporting that a task seemed much easier/less difficult to accomplish, 3) verbalizing what they noticed that they did (a verbal celebration), 4) positive responses to my probes to check on internalization (i.e., "You mentioned that you called your best friend over the weekend, and it seemed as if you were able to accomplish that pretty easily. How did that feel?"--If they respond, "Yeah, it doesn't feel like a big deal anymore. I am starting to enjoy making calls", that tells me they are really aware of the accomplishment, as opposed to their saying, 'my mom made me', or 'it took me an hour to actually make the call and I didn't do very well...'. Hope this gives you some ideas to get you started looking for the signs! Best regards, Lynne
