Kelly, Yes, I agree that there can be too much celebration. How would I define "too much"? I think that would be the point where the client or clinician is giving credit with no real achievement. The reason that I am focusing on the client being able to acknowledge their success is that I want him or her to eventually learn to self-manage stuttering. To do this, a person must be able to plan change, recognize when they have successfully made a change, and have a sense of satisfaction that will help them maintain motivation for continued progress. I don't think that the clinician is really facilitating the client's learning to recognize positive change if they are rewarding the client without clear reason. Thanks for bringing up this point--balance is important in every aspect of intervention. Regards, Lynne
