I think that's a very realistic and difficult problem to solve. Even beyond the realm of the stuttering world we encounter people who are unable to accept praise, and who are very hard on themselves. One of the most important things to remember is that some of that lack of positive outlook comes from a psychological standpoint where the individual is fighting feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem - maybe not always in just that one specific situation. While solving those emotions, specifically, is not necessarily in the SLP's scope of practice, there are still things we can do to improve the outlook on life. Maintining your own positive spin on everything and demonstrating a perserverance through the client's 'dark cloud' moments will go a long way. There's an old saying - "kill them with kindness" that I think applies well to a situation like this. If you continue to push the positive on them eventually some of it will wear off.
