[["the more clearly we see ourselves, the more deeply we understand our problems." As a graduate student in speech pathology at West Virginia University, I have had to understand who I am, how I study, and what motivates me. Once I figure out these things, I can know what the issues are that I will have when it comes to studying, test taking, and working in the clinic. This resonates in daily life as well. It gave me a great perspective on a way to approach the person who stutters' feelings in therapy when working on fluency.]] Hello, Abby, I'm glad reading the paper helped you recognize that what we believe contributes to and often generates the emotions we feel and what we do. For instance, if I believe I am hopeless and nothing I try to change my situation will help, then it is quite likely I may be feeling angry, sad, and/or, possibly, frightened much of the time and unwilling to try to be different. On the other hand, if I believe I possess the wherewhithall to succeed at what I do, I am likely to feel happy much of the time as well as curious and adventurous. Beliefs lead to emotions and behavior. Emotions lead to behavior and beliefs. And behavior leads to emotions and beliefs. One really can not exist without the other two. That is something very helpful to remember personally and professionally when working with others. /// Knowing what we deeply believe about ourselves, others, and the world helps us is critical to becoming all we are. /// I wrote about the influence of core beliefs at in length in the resource book for students and professionals published in 2009. It is entitled MIND MATTERS. SETTING THE STAGE FOR SATISFYING CLINICAL SERVICE. A PERSONAL ESSAY. It is an easy read and very practical. /// Thank-you, Abby, for taking the time to share what you learned from the paper. All best wishes, Ellen-Marie Silverman
