Dear Jeanine Thanks for reading thru and coming back with questions! We have to consider three things in our Indian context: Good speech therapy is unaffordable/ inaccessible for average Indian PWS for a variety of reasons- distance, cost etc. Secondly - in a self help group, members do share and practice whatever "techniques" may have helped them- but the emphasis is on promoting acceptance and getting rid of isolation, shame, guilt and fear associated with stammering. Thirdly, SHGs do not discourage members from trying/ opting out for other avenues of help, including paid formal sensible therapies. India has a rich tradition of belief in an inner perfection, independent of outer imperfections. For us, acceptance is based on this. Lastly, in the field of stammering, no one seem to have reached the final understanding of the problem or solution yet. So we keep ourselves open to new ideas and learning.. JP has answered to the specifics. I just wanted to add these few supplementary thoughts. Thanks once again!
