Dear Alyssa As a pws, I would like to respond quickly to your question about why therapy fails: 1. Many therapists believe that stammering can be "cured" if they and their client work HARD and consistently. This is a myth. This sets the client up for more heart breaks. 2. Many therapies treat dis-fluency as a "bad" thing, "fluency" as the desired goal and "Communication" as of no consequence. This further enlarges the iceberg of shame, fear, guilt in the mind of client. 3. Many therapists are satisfied if the client manages to speak without stammering in the clinic. But the real LIFE and its challenges lie outside. Few therapists care to oversee Transfer and Maintenance phase of therapy. 4. There are big components of psychological issues in PWS, which will require excellent counseling skills- meaning listening attentively over long periods and responding accrodingly. Most therapists believe in Action (teach this, teach that) rather than listening! 5. A better approach would be where you arm the pws with all the information and empower her or him to take charge of their situation.. rather than "Treating" them or "curing" their stammer.. Sorry, if I went beyond my brief! Thanks sachin PS: In India, there is an additional factor: Huge fee charged by SLPs in private practice, often in the name of "curing stutter". After paying thru NOSE, pws expects miracle! The only miracle is -the PWS becomes skeptical of the whole thing..
