As a graduate clinician currently in a fluency course and a female, I was extremely shocked when I read the lyrics to Bob Dylan’s song “Ugliest Girl in the World.” I have always been aware of the fact that some people perceive PWS as “stupid,” but I have never realized that the media and musicians are using stuttering as a sign of ugliness. Other songs that stuttering is brought up in are Miley Cyrus’ “See you Again” in which she sings: “The last time I freaked out, I just kept looking down, I st-st-stuttered when you asked me what I’m thinking ‘bout.” Joe also sings a song called Stutter in which he sings: “I can tell you’re lying cuz when you’re replying, stutter, stutters, stutter, stutters.” I am continued to be surprised by all the lyrics in these songs, especially with Miley Cyrus because of so many girls looking up to her singing her lyrics. Are they going to look at stuttering in a negative way? I am very interested in reading you book and think it will be a great tool to use in therapy with younger children who stutter.
