Sarah, I am a first year grad student at The University of Toledo, and I am enrolled in my first Fluency Disorders course. I have already learned so much about stuttering this semester, and the most important thing I have taken away from the class thus far is the fact that stuttering can negatively affect a person's emotional and social self-concept. It makes me so sad to think that you believed yourself to be less of a person because of your stuttering. It is also ridiculous to think that someone would treat another human being the way that employee treated you. However, I am so glad that you were able to turn this negative experience into such a positive and life-changing one instead. Do you have any suggestions regarding what a clinician can do to help people who stutter realize their self-worth? I would love some tips on how to help increase a client's self-esteem and confidence in their speaking abilities. I think the counseling aspect of working with people who stutter may be the most difficult aspect of being a speech-language pathologist, and it would be wonderful to get some advice from someone who has experienced stuttering herself! Again, I am so proud of what you have accomplished, and I hope you always value yourself and what you bring to this world!
