Victoria, Let me applaud you for asking that question. In general the best support I’ve received is from friends/family who are patient with me no matter how long it takes for me to finish my sentence. Also, maintaining natural eye contact is important too. May sound simple, but there are so many more times that I do not receive that type of listener reaction. Another type of great support is to not fill in his words when say, you all are out to eat. One example that comes to mind is when in college we had to do mock group interviews as a way to prepare for the types of questions we would might be asked. Of course, I was really nervous. I really struggled a lot during those 2 hours. Two of my friends were at the mock interview as well, and afterwards they told me that I did great, and that I did it. I didn’t back out. I stuck it out and did the best I could. They believed in me, before I believed in myself. That was REALLY huge. They had CONFIDENCE in me, that I could do it. I must have told them that I was worried what others at the table thought because I stuttered. They said, “pay no matter.” Supporting him can be as simple as standing by him quietly as he talks to a store clerk. Specifically to this negative reaction, I had friends/family tell me that they were proud of me for standing up for myself and that felt really, really good. Hope this helps some.
