I was not 6 but in the 6th grade when first getting support regarding stuttering. In regard to spasmodic dysphonia, it is difficult to separate some of the speech characteristics of stuttering from those of SD. For a long time I did not want to believe I also had SD although it certainly felt different to me than stuttering, but dysfluencies were present with both. In the early 70's I started a support group for peopls who stutter (This was before the NSA existed or was in infant stages), this was also before going back to school to become a SLP. Being involved in that support group was a valuable experience of using leadership skills that I did not know I had and we explored many topics. I have since been involved in an NSP support group but I have not been as active and not in a leadership roll..
