I am not sure how much my being a SLP helped me cope with my stuttering but it certainly helped with the coping with the Spasmodic Dysphonia. With some knowledge about voice production I was better able to compensate for the voice problem, I think. Working with others and helping them cope also taught me about coping. Now I am wondering if you, when talking about coping, are you speaking emotionally coping or using behavioral strategies to control the stuttering and the voice problem? Both have been important facets in my situation. Interestingly, I also learned something from a Physical therapist after I broke a bone in my shoulder. I was taught how to relax my shoulders which also, I realized, relieved tightness in my neck muscles which made it easier to speak in regard to stuttering and SD. We learn from everyone around us, our book learning is only the start.
