100s of stuttering genes = 100s of different causes?

You write that there could be 100s like in deafness. Can you explain a bit how functionally different these genes are? It seems to me that hearing is a complex system with tens of subsystems where each could be affected by tens of genes. Do you expect the same for stuttering? Or do you expect only very few functional classes for stuttering genes. My intuition is that many genes can disrupt a stable speech system. But then why do we see clear signals from brain imaging? Or are these just the common reactions to different instability? Like the behaviour of drivers in traffic jams are the same even though the cause of the jam is different?
