"identification of these genes will explain stuttering in a larger number of individuals..." Of course, that's 'explain' in a genetic sense, no explain in a mechanistic, biological sense. Given that, as I understand, the semi-automatic process of speech generation is not understood at this time, and speech generation is a black box, how can finding genes associated with stuttering add to our knowledge of that process? How does the knowledge that a mutation in a particular protein correlates with stuttering tell us anything about a pathology in a process of which we are totally ignorant?
