Thank you for the informative summary of the current genetics research in stuttering! I have heard a lot of talk in the media recently regarding genes being expressed (“turned on”) or not expressed, (“turned off”) by environmental factors. I am wondering if it could be said that the 30-50% of genetically identical twins, cited in your paper, who did not stutter, did not get their genes “turned on?” Do you think that the genes that are being linked to stuttering can be “turned off” either by things that the person does or things in the environment? If the child continues to stutter, does learning compensatory speech strategies, changing the way they talk, affect gene expression?
