Dr. Drayna, Your investigation of stuttering being a genetic factor is very interesting. As a graduate student we study all of the different definitions and causes of stuttering. Genetics is one cause of stuttering that we have looked at. This is especially interesting to me because I recently found out my maternal great-grandfather was a severe stutterer his whole life. I knew that my mother stuttered moderately when she was very young, but spontaneously recovered. I also knew that I stuttered more mildly than my mother when I was very young. After learning about great-grandfather it made me think, if our family has a stuttering genetic factor. My question is if we can find these genes that are supposedly mutation genes can we find them in utero? If we could find the 10% whose stuttering is cause by a genetic factor, can we do something so that no one else is their family has the genes that cause it also?
