The mutations that cause deafness cover a vast spectrum of biological functions. This makes sense, as there are many ways in which one could damage an exquisitely detailed and sensitive organ such as the cochlea within the inner ear, and all of these can lead to deafness. Likewise, it seems likely that a function as complex as speech could be damaged in many different ways, so finding a lot of different stuttering genes would not be a surprise. The results of imaging studies are likely to reflect speech itself, I think. All of the people in these studies have one disorder, stuttering, so it makes sense that their neuroimaging results are similar.
