Consanguineous families tend to bring out genetic disorders. The large Pakistani families we've studied to date have been crucial for identification of the location of causative genes for stuttering, and ultimately for the identification of the individual genes themselves. Our genetic studies to date have provided one and only one linkage location in each family. Thus while these families have lots of general consanguinity, only markers on the long arm of chromosome 12 co-occur with stuttering in these families. This tells us that no gene in any other location is causative of stuttering in these families.
