Our genetic findings to date haven't shed much light on gender differences in stuttering. In families with many cases of stuttering (likely to be due to a genetic cause of some kind), the male to female ratio is about 1 to 1.5. This is much more equal than the 1 to 4 or 1 to 5 ratio seen in the general population. So not surprisingly, the mutations we've found so far are the ones with the biggest effect, an effect so big that it overwhelms the usual male:female difference in stuttering.
