It's possible that epigenetic factors could be involved in stuttering. One hallmark of such factors in human disorders is so-called parent-of-origin effects, where a disorder can be inherited from only males or from only females. While the inheritance of stuttering in families does not follow a clear pattern (such as dominant or recessive), we do not see any evidence for parent-of-origin effects in the stuttering families we have examined to date.
