Kay, We are still exploring all of the HIPAA ramifications with Teletherapy. My thought is that if clients are going to use a free system like Skype (most other systems are cost prohibitive for the average client), they will need to give up some security. I currently explain this to my clients, and suggest that they don't discuss anything online that they would not be comfortable seeing on YouTube at some point in time. This discussion in itself can be therapeutic (i.e. stuttering must be objectified). I'm sure my lawyer would like a signed waiver, acknowledging their consent. But it all comes down to a risk/benefit analysis. I think as long as we are open with our clients as to the risk, they should be able to decide. We work out the timing for the parent involvement, by offering the intensive on a F, Sa, and Su. They will need to commit to taking time off of work. When I was at the Michael Palin Center for Stammering in 2009, parents were taking 2 weeks off of work to be in their teen/parent program. We are only asking for 3 days.
