Derek, I'm glad you hooked up with David. Finding the right therapist is one of the keys to change. Your readiness and openness to change of course, is a bigger key. But research has shown the the client/clinician relationship is a much more important factor than the treatment approach. So... be honest with yourself, and be honest with David, and good things will happen. I happen to be the Chair of the Specialty Board on Fluency Disorders. The current process of becoming a specialist involves 25 hours of observation. With the advent of teletherapy, we have updated our Standards and Procedures manual to allow applicants to observe other clinicians (recommended by their mentor) via Skype. So the answer is yes, if you happen to know a clinician you would like to observe, you could ask about observing via Skype in the same way you would ask about observing in person. You would have to present a solid rationale for the observations, the SLP would need to get permission from the client, and you would need to demonstrate that only you were observing, etc. But... it could be done. Good luck with your SLP career.
