Maria - Thanks for your reading of the article and your comments. To me, by the time the TWS and the parents reach us, they are quite willing to be on the same page! Conflict and chosen silence have emerged as a result of previous therapy attempts. Many TWS and their parents have shared with me that the BIGGEST conflicts - when it comes to therapy - between TWS and their parents is that parents are expecting/implying/demanding the TWS to use the techniques they have taught in previous therapies to stop or control their stuttering, and the teen who stutters does not want to use the techniques because - to them - "techniques don't work" and "anyways, shouldn't what I say be infinitely more important than how I say it?" Parents and TWS must be on the same page, working for the same goals. That is their best hope! Kevin and I will get them on the same page; the real questions is WHAT ARE THE GOALS WE ARE WORKING TO ACHIEVE TOGETHER? The goals of techniques for stopping or controlling stuttering a completely contradictory to the goals of increasing interaction, decreasing communication apprehension (fear of stuttering, fear of talking, fear of interacting) and increasing verbal interaction with others. hope this helps...
