I really do not think that public speaking is a good therapeutic tool for all people who stutter. Stephanie is just a very unique individual. She does not seem to mind speaking in front of people. She is someone who speaks her mind, to almost anyone! If she disagrees with someone, it is difficult for her to hold it in. At times, she speaks when she really shouldn't. These activities worked for her, but I wouldn't do it with someone else if they were not comfortable with the idea of speaking in front of people. I think as a teenager, I would have been petrified to speak in front of teachers! Stephanie is just unique that way. I cherish this experience with her and I am a better therapist because of her. I believe in letting students share their feelings about stuttering. I would explore the best way to let each one do so. Since I am in several small school districts, I do not have many students who stutter. This has given me some tools to be ready for my next student who stutters. Thanks for continuing to think about this. It is pretty neat.
