Hi Judy, It was nice to hear from you, and thanks for your comments. Rather than 'satisfactory' I use 'satisfied' and measure that on a scale of how satisfied a person is with some aspect of communication. I have found that this helps folks understand that their attitudes and feeings are what are most important. When satisfaction is not as strong, then we put our heads together to find ways to increase that level of satisfaction. Although you certainly can pinpoint tasks on a scale using a hierarchy of difficulty, I encourage folks to keep the scales more general. You could use specific steps such as talking privately with a teacher, answering a one word question in a small group, answering a longer question in class etc. I find it more helpful, though, to have a general scale such as , "Talking at school: 1=very little to 7=all the time". This way there is room to celebrate accomplishments that might not have been put on a more specific scale. Hope this is helpful!
