Alicia, Thank-you for your thoughts and question. Yes, I think continuum's would work well too. The rating scales make it a little easier to record data, though. If I present a scale to a client who is not yet ready to address the content of the scale, the client is much less likely to use the scale. I have to be careful about designing each scale with the client to best meet the client's current needs and strengths.
