I remember going to therapy when I was in kindergarten but I don't remember anything about the therapy. It was never explained to me why I was in therapy and I didn't have any goals. But, maybe I was too young to understand what was going on. So, I guess the main message to an SLP is tell to a young child why he/she is working on improving speech. For me, my speech got worse with time and I don't recall being helped in middle school and high school. I think kids have to be ready to learn what they can do to improve their speech and have specific speech goals for therapy to be successful. Probably, some kids are ready for working on their speech and some are not. Hope this helps.
