Hi, My name is Kimberly and I'm a graduate student studying to be an SLP. Thank you so much for sharing your story; I found it very inspiring. I think that many SLPs find themselves lacking experience in working with fluency clients who are culturally diverse, so it is important for stories like yours to be shared in the community. It seems to me (and I could be mistaken) that in Croatia the attitude toward stuttering is associated with stigma--this is similar to the attitude in the Philippines. In the Philippines, there is hesitation to seek professional help for things that are seen as something that can be fixed without outside help. Do you think, in addition to your father receiving advice that your stutter would resolve itself, that this social stigma played a part in the fact that your family didn't seek services? How different do you think your life story would be had you received services as a child?
