Jenna, I did not receive any advice on what to write or on how to start. I have had so many successes and failures throughout my life, and have learned from each of them. In writing this article, I just reflected back to the beginning of my adult life and what influenced me to go forward. My parents and family was infuential and supportive. But, being anxious about going out into the world on my own was filled with anxiety. I was fortunate to have had a great science teacher to motivate and challenge me, the same one who picked me to give the speech. Surviving this speech gave me confidence, which stayed with me after high school. For your eleven year old, I would advisr him to not back down from speaking situations. With each one, good or bad, it will get easier, over time. Patience is hard for children, but it is important. Trusting in you and you always being there for him is important. Continual motivation and support is definitely needed. I would also advise him to join social goal oriented organizations, ie. Boys & Girls Clubs, Boys Scouts, etc, to gain peer support as well. Keeping a success diary may help, so whenever he is discouraged, he can look back and read about successful endeavors from the past. Good luck with your students. Keep supporting and motivating them. You will make a difference in their lives. Eugene Johnson
