Great question. I find 2nd and 3rd graders are already personalizing comments, reactions, and other negative feedback. Piaget's Preoperational Stage ends at age 7. The kids have more solid memory. They do what psychologists call "comparing self to other." I reframe these negative events early to reduce chance of the "stutterer identity" from forming.
