Good question. Parents and SLPs should tell a child that he may see severe stuttering and be prepared. The danger is just to presume that each child who stutters is ready for group therapy simply because they share a diagnosis of stuttering. Temperament is key here. We can lose a rapport and relationship if a child is thrown by the experience. If done well, group therapy can be GREAT. Seeing another person stutter can in fact reframe one's thoughts about stuttering. Some kids think they are the only one who stutters in their community. Set them up to succeed and consider group interaction with prudence.
