I am pleased that significant research in social phobia and state anxiety is being done as it relates to stuttering. In the study by Blood, et al in 2007 they conclude 44% of pws had social phobia. http://www.csun.edu/~ainslab/readings/PastLabMembers/Daniel/Blood_Anxiety%20levels%20in%20adolescents%20who%20stutter.pdf I have my teens and adults list avoidance tricks designed to conceal or prevent stuttering. Most have at least 10 avoidance habits. I believe state anxiety is behind that. How else can one explain the covert operations? After 20 years working with adults who stutter I feel like I am good at asking the right questions to elicit the avoidance habits. It is my professional opinion that it is higher than 44% and may be as high as 75%. One European study- that I cannot locate right now- suggested 90%. My hats off to all pws who plow ahead with zero avoidance tricks.
