Nice addition to the pice. You are right. We might ask "what is the threat?" Or, "what do you think will happen if you stutter?" These questions will help reveal the cognitive distortions. Several years back Woody Starkwether and a colleague posted a paper calling stuttering a variant of PSTD. When we attach extreme fear to stuttering it seems easier just to avoid talking. We have a time-line of negative experiences and pws often then make their intention to NOT stutter versus speak up. My paper last year was Purpose, Intention, and Stuttering. Yes, challenging threat is key.
