I have heard it said, in various forms, that the way we think can determine the way we feel, and the way we feel can determine the way we act. Using an intrinsic approach and investigating a person’s thoughts and feelings about stuttering really does seem like the best way to glean understanding. This insight is fundamental in shaping the future actions of people who stutter. As part of my graduate fluency course I was required to stutter in public settings. Despite the fact I had the luxury of choosing to stutter, it really did help me gain a better understanding of the fear and anxiety associated with stuttering. This exercise allowed me to relate to the “projecting” and “personalization” that can occur. I appreciate your article, it is a good reminder that therapy is not just about stuttering, but about how the person thinks, feels, and acts.
