I recently started the Communicative Disorders graduate program at the University of Redlands in California. I have found that the more I learn about stuttering, the more I am drawn to the topic. In particular, I am fascinated by the very points you address in your paper about social phobia, projecting, personalizing, and all the emotional/psychological aspects of stuttering as well as the couseling that might be involved as part of therapy. I truly appreciate your insights. I am not a PWS, so I realize that I will never fully understand the complex emotional impact of stuttering on an individual. I fear that this might interfere in my attempts to work with a PWS who comes with a “you wouldn’t understand” attitude because, in fact, I might not understand. What advice might you offer to me about addressing the topics mentioned in your paper while working with a client possessing such an attitude?
