I just want to add that the comments above are based upon things I've done in instances where children are doing things similar to what you described above as a result of stuttering. As I said, those ideas may or may not apply specifically to your son - so it's important to consult with a therapist who is experienced with treating stuttering first. The other point is that practice activities are typically quite focal (i.e., during therapy sessions, of course, and then for short, specified periods outside of therapy - not just "any old time, all day, everyday," etc :-).
