It has always concerned me that the costal breathing folks teach people to speak with excessive breathiness and sometimes (for women) a lowered larynx. As a voice teacher, this concerns me because excess air on the folds and a lowered larynx in the speaking voice can cause vocal dryness and fatigue. It concerns me that stutterers are spending ( in some cases) a lot of money to join these programmes, only to potentially land themselves with additional vocal problems down the line. This quite apart from whether it is really the costal breathing which is reducing stuttering, rather than the pausing afforded by the breaths, or the extra confidence gained by a supportive cmmunity, or just being allowed to talk about stuttering. Thanks for this eloquent article.
