Dick, thanks for your kind comments. I too have met people who stutter who appear to have taken on abnormal breathing patterns in response to speech therapy. What is interesting is that at least one person has said to me something along the lines of, “Yeah, but you should have heard me before.” Meaning that even if I or we hear the breathing pattern as abnormal sounding, they find it preferable to their speech before treatment. My strong suspicion is that people who stutter can be helped without having to rely upon such breathing patterns. This is where I think it is important to really figure out what aspect(s) of programs are helping and why. Thanks again.
