Katie, thank you for your really kind words about our article. I have also seen breathing strategies become part of the stuttering problem. While thinking about your question, it occurred to me that most speech-language pathologists who have experience working with people who stutter would not work on helping clients tap their feet better or blink their eyes better (other common secondaries). So I am not sure why we focus so much on breathing. It is possible that focusing on breathing may be similar to focusing on foot tapping and other behaviors traditionally thought of as secondaries.
