Art, thanks for taking the time to write and share your experiences. You wrote, “I do speak in phases with pauses between the phases.” Do you mean to say “phrases”? If you mean phrases, then this is something I have heard from a number of people who use costal breathing. It is also something I have observed listening to people speak using costal breathing. As we mentioned in our paper, pausing is often associated with a reduced frequency of stuttering. In our paper we give an example of a study that could be done with control groups. It would be interesting to add to this example a group of people using pausing as their physical speaking strategy. You wrote, “I will take a costal breath before I even attempt to speak. It’s a way to get myself into a speech modification mode.” Could you explain this more? What do you mean by a speech modification mode? Do you mean ready to focus on speaking and stuttering, ready to do something like use voluntary stuttering, or something else? Thanks again for taking the time to write.
