Peter, I'm sorry, I did mean "phrases" unstead of "phases". With regard to taking a costal breath before I start to speak, it is a way to get myself to think about speech modification. Thinking about what I want to actually say and connecting with my listener with good eye contact. I'll also repeat the first sound of the first word that I'm saying to start to disclose that I stutter. My stuttering is triggered by some emotion (anxiety, fear, whatever my subscious is reacting to). So I think that taking a breath before I respond is a good way to dissipate the anxiety before I speak. I'll also use an affirmation like "I'm the boss", to put myself into a more proactive state of mind. Again, costal breathing is just part of a larger picture. Yes, I appreciate that you mentioned pausing between phrases when speaking in your paper. Thanks so much for leading this discussion by submitting your original paper.
