Art, thanks so much for bringing up such interesting points. If I understand you correctly, you describe costal breathing as including pausing, taking a deep breath to reduce anxiety and think time/preparation time for formulating thoughts, language and eye contact. Very interesting. One of the reasons I think costal breathing needs to be examined much more closely is because of all the components and different ways it is described. For example, I have heard people who use costal breathing say they pause one or more times a sentence to re-initiate the tool. Since that is true for some or even many users, the question I ask is “What exactly is helping?” Why take a deep, full, shallow, short, and/or quick breath, while speaking assertively, while using a low and breathy voice, while projecting, while not using thinking pauses if the pausing is the piece that is really helping? Art, thanks again for taking the time to weigh in and share your thoughts and experiences. If you have more thoughts as the conference continues, I hope you have the time to share them.
