Hi Peter and Bob, thanks for writing about this topic. I found it very interesting, and am also learning from the discussion. As an SLP with specialization in stutering it is a valuable topic. I have never worked only on breathing before, nor has it been a separate goal and I really haven't needed to talk about it for many sessions because it seems like such a natural action. Having said all that, I now have a little 8 year old client who starts talking, and runs out of breath before his sentence is complete, and he pushes even harder at the end of his utterance because he has run out of air. So, we are doing fluency enhancing (easy onset,, pausing), and stuttering mod, (examining the speech mech, how things work, desensitization). We have talked a little about the breathing as it relates to making speech. Any suggestions for this little guy? I dont want things to get too complicated for him with regard to all he has to pay attention to just to communicate, he is able to attend, he is bright and he is very brave. Thank you in advance for your thoughts, and I will apologize in advance, incase this is going to stir things up, that is not my intention!
