James, thanks again for writing. I have heard the term “cult” used to describe and dismiss a range of intensive programs. I have heard people refer to stuttering modification and fluency shaping intensive programs as being cultish. I am not into labels, so my first question is typically, “What do you mean by that?” For example, what do you mean by fluency? What do you mean by acceptance? What do you mean by cult? Many people who stutter want to make changes, want to have people invested in their journey and their success and are pleased and motivated to meet a clinician or peer counselor who supports and guides them. If or when that rises to cultish is a topic for another day.
