Paul, great to hear from you and thanks for your comments. You state “There do not appear to be significant differences between this approach [fluency shaping] and the approach that you describe [costal breathing]. True, the Full Breath Target is only one of a number of major targets within Precision Fluency…” Fluency shaping may certainly focus on breathing, as does the costal breathing strategy described in our paper, but they appear to be different treatments with numerous different “targets.” Let me give an example which may highlight my view on the matter. People who use costal breathing have said that part of the tool includes using a pause to initiate or re-initiate a costal breath. But costal breathing as described in our paper and cancellations are clearly different even if they share a common action (a pause). Thanks again for sharing your views and experiences.
