Jillian, thanks for taking the time to ask such good questions. You wrote, “I would hope that clinicians would utilize evidence-based practice when providing services” and also wrote “I had to wonder how the clients are being taught to reduce their avoidance behaviors using desensitization, etc...when I think that is something that should a licensed professional should do.” Many folks may agree with you, but is that an evidence based conclusion? In other words, what evidence is there that professionals get better results than peer counselors? I think many may assume that to be true, but I am someone who wants to see the evidence. You ask, “Do you know of any alternative fluency intervention strategies that provide these types of breathing techniques that have been researched?” As we said in the article, I am not aware of any published peer reviewed studies on costal breathing for people who stutter. Thanks again for writing.
