I was never satisfied with simply acceptance of my stuttering. I wanted to conquer it, to beat it, to stomp it into the ground, and to destory it. I felt that there was nothing physically wrong with me, so why couldn't I beat it. If I could speak fluently at my sweet gum tree or when speaking to animals, the entire problem must be psychological. Armed with that sort of a mindset, I tried to self-analyze myself. Why could I speak fluently in some cases (as with animals) but have great difficulty in other situations (as with authority figures or large groups). It must be something psychological. I decided that the only way I could overcome this problem would be to put myself into situations where I would have to speak to authority figures and large groups. That's when I decided to go into teaching. It forced me to speak to groups on a regular basis. I believe that is one of the main things that pulled me out of the stuttering closet. Wayne Rabalais
